The Power of Perseverance: Insights from J.D. Barker on Entrepreneurship

Updated: Dec 1

As an entrepreneur, I know the journey is often filled with both triumphs and challenges. There are moments when the road ahead seems uncertain, and the obstacles feel insurmountable. But the power of perseverance is the true difference-maker between those who succeed and those who don’t.

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with J.D. Barker, entrepreneur and bestselling author of The Fourth Monkey, Behind A Closed Door, Forsaken, among others.

J.D.'s story has given me fresh perspectives on why perseverance is so crucial in both business and creative endeavors.

J.D. Barker (Jonathan Dylan Barker) is an international bestselling American author whose work has been broadly described as suspense thrillers, often incorporating elements of horror, crime, mystery, science fiction, and the supernatural.

However, J.D.'s journey began in a very different place—working a corporate job he despised—before he took the leap into the world of writing and entrepreneurship.

What stood out to me during our conversation was how he didn’t let fear, rejection, or the fear of failure hold him back. Instead, he continuously pushed forward, adapting to changing circumstances and building new opportunities for himself.

Embracing the Power of Co-Authoring

J.D.'s approach to entrepreneurship in the literary world is particularly insightful. He has embraced the concept of co-authoring working with various writers to produce multiple books each year.

This approach has allowed him to tap into expertise outside his own knowledge base, enriching his stories and expanding his reach.

His latest work, Heavier Than Stones, co-written with Christine Dagle, a neuropsychologist, highlights the importance of collaboration.

He mentioned how her specialized knowledge enhanced the book, creating a much richer and more impactful story than he could have created alone.

From an entrepreneurial standpoint, this is a valuable lesson. Sometimes, we can’t do it all ourselves, and that’s okay. Surrounding yourself with the right people who bring different expertise to the table can help you elevate your business and ideas.

Whether it's finding a mentor, partnering with someone with complementary skills, or working with a team, collaboration can be the secret ingredient to taking your business or project to the next level.

Turning Setbacks Into Opportunities

J.D. shared how early on in his career, he made a big decision to leave his corporate job, even though it was a step into the unknown. He told us that while it was scary, it was also necessary. He chose to pursue his passion for writing, knowing that if he stayed where he was, he'd never grow.

That resilience paid off when he connected with James Patterson, whose mentorship and guidance helped shape J.D.'s writing career.

What struck me about this part of J.D.'s story is his willingness to take risks, even when it seemed like the safe path was just to stay in a comfortable job. His story is a testament to the idea that sometimes, you need to make a bold move in order to push forward.

In entrepreneurship, we often face crossroads where staying in our comfort zone seems easier, but it’s in those moments of discomfort where growth happens. J.D. didn’t shy away from challenges—he embraced them.

Paying It Forward: Mentoring the Next Generation

One thing that really resonated with me during our conversation was J.D.'s commitment to mentoring up-and-coming authors. He took what he learned from James Patterson and flipped the mentorship model.

Instead of charging aspiring authors to learn from him, he pays them to co-write books with him, teaching them how to craft their stories, outline chapters, and build compelling narratives.

As an entrepreneur, I see the value in paying it forward. Helping others doesn’t just create good karma—it builds a community that thrives together. J.D.'s mentorship is about giving back, sharing knowledge, and elevating others in a way that benefits everyone involved.

It’s a reminder that success isn't a zero-sum game. We don’t lose when we help others rise; in fact, it often leads to more opportunities for collaboration and growth.

Never Stop Evolving

Throughout our conversation, J.D. emphasized the importance of constantly challenging oneself and striving for more. He shared that even though he has had great success, he’s always looking for ways to take it to the next level.

Whether it’s pushing the boundaries of his writing or exploring new business ventures, J.D. never allows himself to become complacent. This attitude is key for any entrepreneur.

The entrepreneurial journey doesn’t end when you reach a certain milestone. In fact, that’s when the real work begins.

Growth is a continuous cycle, and the moment you stop evolving is the moment your business stagnates. Whether it’s learning new skills, testing new ideas, or pivoting to meet changing demands, you have to stay hungry and motivated to push forward.

Perseverance: The Ultimate Entrepreneurial Skill

One of the most inspiring takeaways from my conversation with J.D. Barker was his relentless perseverance. He’s been through challenges, made mistakes, faced rejection, but has continued to push through all of it. His story is a perfect reminder that success doesn’t happen overnight, and it certainly doesn’t happen without overcoming setbacks.

Entrepreneurs face obstacles every day, but the difference between those who succeed and those who fail is their ability to push through adversity. J.D. embodies that resilience, and his journey reminds me that perseverance is not just about pushing forward when things are easy—it’s about keeping your focus and drive even when things are tough.

Final Thoughts

As entrepreneurs, we must keep pushing ourselves, embrace new opportunities for growth, and be willing to collaborate with others who bring different expertise to the table. We must always remember that setbacks are just stepping stones to success, and perseverance is the key that unlocks the doors to new opportunities.

J.D.'s story has reminded me that entrepreneurship is not just about achieving success—it’s about building a legacy and helping others along the way.

In business and in life, we’re all on this journey together, and when we support each other, we rise together.

If you're an aspiring writer or entrepreneur, I encourage you to check out J.D. Barker’s work, and remember, perseverance is the secret ingredient that can transform your dreams into reality.
